I was delivering an extra mushroom and sausage pizza on a rainy night. I pulled up to a very nice home in my own town and was running late due to
the weather. This couple invited me in out of the rain. (I always appreciated that.)
I chit-chatted while the blonde with the smile went for money. I asked, "Are
you and your wife staying in for the night to avoid the weather?" He
replied, "This is our first date." I surveyed the musical instruments and
artwork. Being a huge music fan and album collector, I recognized the range
of musical influences and couldn't believe that someone this cool could live
in my hometown. I was delivering pizzas for extra money after my day job.
The next day, armed with only a phone number on a greasy receipt, I called
her to ask how the service was. She almost hung up. I begged her to
listen. I explained what her date said and asked her to dinner. She flatly
refused. After explaining that I was shy and a good person, who only wished
to discuss music, she agreed to meet me for an hour for a drink down the
street. I thought she wouldn't show.
She did. A wealthy professional met the pizza guy for a drink. It turned
into dinner. It turned into a date. It turned into her dumping the other
fellow who was a promising editor. It turned into a relationship and then on October 10, 1998, it turned into my marriage.
A wedding gift from the guy on the couch that night was addressed: To Mr.
and Mrs. Pizza Guy.
A true story.
