Delivery story 440

This happened to a fellow driver and myself less then a month ago.

During the recent terrible storms and tornadoes in Missouri our pizza place (Domino's in north central Missouri) decided to stay open as it would be better for business.

It started out as just a heavy downpour and I was taking the delivery to a customer about 10 miles out of town. Halfway to the address (which we found out later was in no way marked) it started hailing and the rain was so terrible the wipers on max couldn't keep up. I was forced to pull over and used my personal cell phone to inform the customer that the moment I could see the road I would continue to their house.

The rain slowed down and I started back on the road again only to have my windshield wipers completely break on me. I found out later the wind had torn the motor completely apart. I had to call another driver (call him J) to pick the food up and finish the delivery.

The driveway I had pulled onto when my wipers stopped was right off the highway. I asked the residents if I could keep my car there just until I could drive it without wipers and explained my situation. They were very kind people and I even wrote a thank-you note after the events for not having my car towed.

Anyway, J came and picked the pizzas up and I started panicking as funnel clouds started forming in the field right beside us. Luckily they never touched down but trees were thrown on the road on the way to the delivery. J picked me up and we rode in his car to finish the delivery. I had twisted my ankle after falling in the ditch getting out of my car after the wiper incident. When we finally found the address in the rain the entire road was blocked off. J literally had to run almost 300 feet down the driveway in the pouring rain to get to the house and give them their pizzas. When he got back both of us were completely soaked. I found out later that they had stiffed him completely complaining that their pizza was late.

About two hours later the same people had the nerve to sit there and order again while it was still raining and informed us that they still hadn't moved the tree out of their driveway and we would have to run to the house again. Let's just say they never received their second order...

People, you need to understand that no matter what the weather is like, or driving conditions, we have to do our jobs whether we like it or not, and for you to f*cking stiff us when a scenario like that happens makes you scum.

Not to mention the repairs for my wipers for trying to get you your pizza on time cost me $300 for a new wiper motor and linkage set, and another $140 for labor at the CHEAPEST mechanic in town. It's been a month and I have STILL not made up in tips what it cost me to make my car roadworthy in inclement weather. I make $6.50 an hour plus tips and am so poor I only eat mess up orders at work. I can't afford food at home because, when I'm stiffed, personal money is used to drive your food to you. Money I need to survive.

Thank you, J, for being amazing. I just wish people would appreciate what we do. If being a pizza delivery driver is a "lazy job that anyone can do" which I've heard several times, why the hell do we put up with so much for so little? You have to have character.
