I worked at a Domino's in La Plata, MD recently. I am still a driver but for Papa John's.
Of course I had the general idiot customers who don't tip, tip short change, or even ask me for the 34 cents back, don't get to the door for a good five minutes with me standing in the rain, or the ones who know their house is five minutes down a maze of unmarked dirt roads and don't notify us or answer the phone. But I only had two especially notable bad experiences while at Domino's.
One was when during a delivery to a motel a good 15 minutes away. Two middle-aged tipsy ladies answered the door. They gave me just enough to cover the bill with some change left. The second woman started to talk to me about how drivers live off of tips and how terrible that is, so she asked for change for a ten and gave me two dollars. Better than nothing I thought, but I was a little unnerved by their getting so close to me and moving behind me so I excused myself. When I get back to the store to cash out, lo and behold, they swiped a majority of my money! And to further the pain I felt, I still had the same two dollars rolled together that they had given me! For someone to not only steal from someone who really doesn't make that much as it is, is just unbelievable. But for them to throw in my face how they feel for me not getting tips and how terrible it must be is just downright cruel.
The second event made me very cautious. I was delivering to a semi-rundown neighborhood and as I was returning to my car a man cut me off from my door asking me if I had a boyfriend and what I thought of him instead. I am no idiot. As a 19-year-old female delivery driver, I know the risks are much higher for me so of course I carry mace on my key chain and even two box cutters in my pockets. So I had a steady finger on the button the whole time I was trying to shimmy around the guy as I was trying to tell him I was taken and I needed to get back to work. He put his hand on my shoulder very tightly trying to persuade me. My second hand went right to my box cutter and opened it at my side. After a few seconds of pulling away, he noticed and backed off trying to make it seem as if he was just playing and no problem. I did not notify the police, being as he backed off, but I definitely did not take any more deliveries to that area at night. It's terrible that idiots like him should lead me to lose deliveries and money because they think behavior like that is okay.
