This evening (July 14, 2009) I was driving down the customer's street (Mint Hill Lane,) searching for his address. I was only about halfway down the street to that address, when I noticed a man standing on the right side of the street (not on the sidewalk, nor in a driveway.) He was out there with a little boy, presumably his son. Each had a bicycle, and it appeared as if the man was making some adjustment to his. All of a sudden, he stood up and started using his arms to flag me down.
I had no idea why he was doing this, but I stopped and asked if he had placed the order, only to have him yell at me, "Just slow down. That's all!" The speed limit for this street is 25 (or so I was told by my fellow co-workers who are delivery drivers as well) and so I thought perhaps I had been driving a bit fast, but certainly no faster than 30. I didn't say a word to the man and continued on to the house to deliver the customer's order.
When I got back in my car to leave, I could see the same man down the street, riding his bike on the street as if he were testing it out after having made some adjustments. As I approached him, I ensured that I was not driving over 30 miles per hour. Plus, I was on the opposite side of the street from him. Thus, I presented an even lesser danger to him than earlier when I was driving on the same side of the street.
No matter. As I passed him, his gaze followed me and he yelled out, "A$$hole!" This guy, who was in the street fixing his bike (instead of on the sidewalk or driveway) calls me an a$$hole?!?! Especially after I had made sure not to blow by him on my way out. What's more, that little boy heard him very clearly yell that insult at me. On top of all of this, I and others consider me to be a very safe driver who is not reckless at all.
I considered stopping, backing up and asking this man, "Do we have a problem, sir?" but I didn't. I just kept right on driving, all the way back to the store.
