What gets me even more than people who don't tip, which are plentiful here in Asheville, NC, are the people who when you get to the door only have big bills. Now come on. Common sense says that we wouldn't carry $100 worth of change. How stupid would that be! Then when you offer to go to the nearest store or gas station for change, they treat you like a thief and either say never mind the pizza or they expect it for free. And what do you get for your trouble? Well, I get a measly $1.35 in gas compensation from my store. It happened today in a new upperclass neighborhood called Livingston Farms.
Livingston Farms is a 7 mile drive to and a 7 mile drive back from my store. My car gets 20 miles to the gallon. You do the math. I paid for this guy to refuse his pizza. I am NOT going to lose my only source of income for any change I could make off with by taking a $100 bill from a customer!! For that matter, it wouldn't be worth losing my job to rob my store even on a Friday or Saturday night. How stupid do people think I am?
You have no clue what it is like to be nice to people who don't appreciate that you risked your life to bring them dinner. Don't tell a delivery driver you appreciate them and then not tip. That is not appreciation. It is an insult. Giving less than $1 does not mean you tipped.
Once I had a woman ask me how I made it only making minimum wage and I told her I lived on tips. She looked like a deer in the headlights as she handed me exact change. Then she proceeded to tell me I looked like a smart girl and I should go back to school and get my GED (I graduated from high school) and get a better job. She was complaining about her job and I just told her I love my job. I love what I do and besides that I probably make more money than you. People should not look down on us for what we do. Many of us love the job and love the work. Sure, I could go to school to learn how to do a job that pays better, but would I be happy? I doubt it.
The moral of the story is: we don't carry more than $20 in change. We don't like being put down for what we do. And ALWAYS remember, tips means: TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE. If you don't tip, your pizza may be later and later every time. The driver is alone with your food. Do you trust them enough to piss them off?
