Delivery story 308

Vic writes:

I work for Domino's in southern California. About two years have passed since this happened. Here it goes.

It was a nice day. The owner and I were discussing making me the store manager when I had a delivery to a not-so-nice motel that we regularly deliver to. I was talking to my brother-in-law through a wire ear piece so my hands were free. I parked directly in front of the room in a way that would allow me to just get in my car and drive away. No backing up or anything. The parking lot was pretty much empty.

I told my brother-in-law to hold on while I delivered the food, so he did. I knocked on the door and a man in his late thirties, 6 foot, and redneck looking answered the door. His wife or girlfriend stood behind him, also looking trailerish. Immediately I noticed he was under the influence of something just by the way he looked. I handed him his food so I could get my pepper spray out of my pocket and in my hand in case anything were to happen. I told him his total and he tried to hand me a credit card. I told him that I could not run that at the motel door and that he was going to have to call the store and have them run it, but he did not understand that. Probably all that inbreeding. I had to tell him several times. The girl that was behind him seemed to understand and tried to hand me some cash. She tried three times to hand it to me and he swatted her hand away every time.

She finally got tired of having her hand swatted, so she crumpled the money up and from behind him, tossed it to me. I caught it and when the guy saw that I caught it, he tried to rush me. I immediately backed up and pointed the pepper spray canister at him. He stopped for a second as if to think to himself, "Do I really wanna do this?" Apparently he did. After that quick pause he came right at me, and he just as quickly had a stream of pepper spray going straight to his eyes.

He screamed and covered his eyes as he walked back to the door. He managed to grab what looked like a small bottle of bleach that was next to the door and threw it in my direction. Then he went back into the room. At that point I told my brother-in-law to hang up and call the police as I walked back to my car. I didn't know what he was going in the room for.

I also called the police and waited for them at the motel entrance.

The police arrived and I was scared when the cop asked me if I was trained to use pepper spray. Before this incident, I had failed out of a police academy but knew enough to know when to spray someone and I knew I had made a good decision. Also, at the time of the incident I was a police explorer and later found out that this guy was sent to jail a few months afterward for using the girl that was with him as a punching bag.

Anyway, I went back to the store and later that day I accepted the position of store manager. The owner had my back when I told him what happened.

As of today, I am no longer the store manager. I am back to driving and still carry pepper spray and two knives and a flash light that makes for a pretty good club. I will soon carry a taser to zap combative customers if need be.

Just FYI. I went back to the academy that I failed out of the first time and graduated this time around.
