Delivery story 289

Ross writes:

It was closing time. I was paying for all of the day's orders and cooking my dinner to take home with me. The Chinese restaurant I work at is awesome like that. Then the phone rang. First off, you always know that when the phone rings, and you're about to go home, it will probably be a delivery. It was worse. It was a stiffer. Not the one dollar stiffer. It was the pay to the penny in cash kind of stiffer. To top things off, this one happened to be very far away at 4.7 miles each way.

So there I was. Forty-five seconds from paying and walking out the door. Then she added the new order to the total. It came out the kitchen in about three minutes and I was on my way.

While I was driving, I couldn't help but think about how I was going to their house and driving my precious car. And how I would not get any money back for my investment. I was angry and then it dawned on me. My food was in the car, also. It would be at least another 20 minutes before I could be home eating it. That enraged me further.

Coincidentally, a thought occurred to me. I was within mere seconds of a side street with my house on it. I thought about it all for about a tenth of a second and came to the conclusion that there was no way they were going to eat their food before me. So I turned and went inside my house. Opening up all my individual sauce packets which takes a considerable amount of time, I ate my food trying to enjoy it and not rush. I didn't want them to have any effect whatsoever on the postponement or the enjoyment of my meal. Then I got back in my car about 20 minutes later to bring them their food.

Needless to say, they paid to the penny. But this time I wasn't pissed about it. I expected it and when it happened it didn't anger me because in my mind and in my heart I knew they got what they paid for.
