My story isn't particularly funny, but I thought I'd send it in to show people out there how much we pizza drivers care about our fellow motorists. We get a bad rap for being terrible drivers, but sometimes it's the pizza guy who's got your back.
I have worked for several Domino's pizza stores in Lake County, Illinois for the better part of 7 years now, doing just about everything. My favorite job, however, is driving. Last year, the store I was delivering for was running a booth at the big event of the summer in our town, Nostalgia Days. I had opened that day, and taken several runs to and from the festival. Around 9 PM or so, I was returning to the store from a drop off at the festival. I stopped at a red light before making a left turn onto the main street, behind a car full of kids heading home. The light turned green, and the car ahead of me went into a left turn. When they went, I didn't see any other cars, but some nutjob came flying out of a gas station right at them. The kid driving the car ahead of me tried to avoid it, but he got T-boned. Immediately, I pulled over in a safe spot, got out of my car and ran over, while calling the accident in to the police. The oldest person in the car was maybe 17, and their parents weren't anywhere around. I hung out with them for about 10 or 15 minutes until the police and paramedics came to take charge of the situation. I gave a statement to the police, and went on about my business.
A few weeks later, my store hosted the #99 Domino's Pizza show car. It was a huge event for us, and we dubbed it Customer Appreciation Day. All hands were on deck for this, and business was rocking. I had a chance to drive the Nascar simulator, and I got spun out. Well, a few hours later, I am returning to the store from a delivery. I hit my turn signal well before I got to the turn. (It was a left turn off the same main road 5 blocks north of where the other incident happened.) As I approached the turn, I moved over to make the turn and slowed down. Just casually I glanced in my rear view mirror just in time to see a Ford Explorer bearing down on my Kia Rio. I got clipped on the passenger side rear and almost spun out. Luckily, I had practiced the same thing earlier in the NASCAR simulator. I pulled my car into the parking lot, jumped out of the car and ran over to the Explorer to make sure the occupants there were alright. While my coworkers were running to check on me, my only thought was for the three 16-year-old girls in the other car. It wasn't until one of the managers said something that I realized my hat had been thrown into the back seat by the force of the impact.
I know people think pizza drivers are a nuisance, but let this be a lesson that we DO care about the people around us.
