Delivery story 173

In college I worked at a Jimmy John's Sandwich Shop in Lexington, KY. One Friday evening I was working and got a delivery to the Dillard's department store in the mall. The lady ordered a sandwich and chips which came out to $5.25. Generally we don't carry coin change on us to deliveries and every delivery is rounded to the quarter, so the most you'd be out is $0.75. Not a big tip by any means. When I hand her the food she hands me $6.00. I'm not too happy, but I'll take a round out to the nearest dollar compared to nothing. Anyhow, she asks for change. I explain to her that we don't carry coin change. She demands that I go back to the store and get her change. So now I'm pissed.

I go back out to my car and get ready to head back to the store. That's when I notice the large pile of pennies in my change tray. I carefully count out the $0.75 which is a pretty big two handfuls. I walk back into the store smiling like an idiot, go straight to the counter, and drop all the pennies on the counter spilling them everywhere and say, "Have a nice day!" turn around and leave. She starts screaming this and that at me while I just casually walk out with the biggest grin you could ever imagine.

When I get back to the store my manager said she called the store calling me every expletive you can imagine and even embellishing on the story making it sound like I called her names and insulted her. This is not in my character and my manager knew this. She basically said it wasn't a good idea and we all had a good laugh about it. It was the best retribution I could've gotten for all the deliveries I'd ever been stiffed on. Needless to say, I will never ever stiff anybody in the food service industry. Even if it's late, chances are they've got a good reason.
