I am a delivery driver for Papa John's in Missoula, MT. I will never forget this delivery. It was dinner rush and I was training my fourth 'probie' of the week. I got an order up to Greenough and headed out. On the way up, I was stuck behind a train. After ten minutes, I was able to complete the run. I got to the house and the guy paid with a $50 on a fifteen dollar order. We are not supposed to accept fifties on anything under $35, but I decided to be nice and make change for the order. The guy tipped me three dollars. As I walked with the trainee back to the car, it all fell apart.
He said something about his soda and I explained that there was no soda listed on the slip. He said he asked for one, and then asked me to get one out of my car. I explained to him that we don’t carry extra soda. He got angry and started yelling about the store screwing up, that he knows it's not my fault, but why can’t I just get his order right. All this time, I was keeping my cool as I can’t blow up at the customer with a newbie there. Finally he asked for his money back and I give him back the fifty. He gave me all the change I gave him back and I left. On the way out, I was stuck behind another train and spent about five minutes talking about what I would like to do to the customer.
When I got back to the store, my manager met me and said the customer called and said I stole three dollars from him. He somehow thought I owed him the tip back, but since he gave me a fifty and the tip came from the change and not his pocket, I only owed him the fifty. The manager agreed, but told me to take the three dollars back anyway. I told him no, I was not losing my own money because the guy couldn't’t add. He said fine, took three dollars from the till, told me to return it, and be nice about it.
Pissed, I stormed out the door and into my car. The newbie got in and we headed back up to the man’s house. At this point I was really pissed. I had wasted almost forty minutes on this one delivery. As luck would have it, on the way back, I was stuck behind another train. They must have been changing cars or something. I finally got to the man's house and he met me in the driveway. He was all nice and explained that he realized he was wrong. He gave me three bucks to make up for my trouble. So after all that, after spending over an hour driving up there, back, and there, and back, I made three dollars. I lost out on the mileage because it was bad ordered. I missed out on several deliveries and then was sent home afterward because I ended up staying past my scheduled time as a result of that one delivery.
