Delivery story 120

I've been working as a delivery driver for nearly 10 years now at several different stores, full-time and now part-time.

Late last summer during a busy Friday night, I brought a pizza to a house that was about 4 miles away, almost at the edge of our delivery area. As I pulled into the driveway, I saw two young girls (about 9 and 11 years old) playing in the sprinkler. They came to greet me as I got out of the car and then told me they'd have to go inside and get the money, so I waited.

They ran to the front door and found it locked. They told me to hold on while they ran to the back door. A few moments later they came back, visibly upset and almost in tears because they had locked themselves out. I asked them if anyone else was home and they said no. It seemed their mother had left them some money to get a pizza. Now they were stuck outside, cold and wet, sun setting and no way to pay for their food.

I felt bad, so much so that I told them not to worry about it and gave them the pizza. (I was working a 10-hour shift, 4 PM to 2 AM so I figured an tab wouldn't hurt me.) In my car I had a 2-liter soda that I had for myself but did not open yet, so I decided to give them that as well. I went on with my other deliveries and then about two hours later my manager handed me an envelope and told me that some woman came by and told him to give it to me. Inside was the bill for the pizza, a thank you letter, and a TIP! :)
